Curriculum

Little Learners Preschool will be an academic preschool.  Our goal is to have each student prepared for kindergarten.  That being said, it doesn't mean that we can't have fun!!  We will master our letters and their sounds, colors, shapes, and numbers.  We will also work on fine motor activities and prepare them to listen and follow directions so that kindergarten will be a success!

We have a very hands on learning approach and I base all my lesson plans from the Utah Core Curriculum and kindergarten readiness checklists.

Reading and Writing

We will work on a new letter of the alphabet each week.  We will learn how to say the name and sound of each letter.  We will learn how to properly write the uppercase and lowercase letter. We will learn how to write first names. We will learn two new sight words each week.  Sight words are words that cannot be sounded out.  We will work to memorize as many as we can.  The more we can memorize now the easier reading will be!

I will also be sending home take home books with children who are interested.  These are the same books that Sand Springs Elementary uses.  The children have so much fun reading them!!

We will also work on work on beginning and ending sounds of words, rhyming, and word families.

Math

Children will learn how to identify, write, and count numbers 1-10.

They will be able to identify the following shapes: circle, square, rectangle, triangle, diamond, heart, oval, and hexagon.

They will be able to make patterns and sort by color, shape, and size.

Carpet Time Skills

Each morning we sit at the mat and spend about 20 minutes there.  We learn the months, the days of the week, the weather, and the seasons.  We talk about our color, shapes, sight words, we count, we sing, and we read stories.  We also work on really important things like sitting still, raising our hands quietly, and listening to the teacher.  I feel like practicing these skills is so important to having a successful kindergarten experience.

Other skills

There are so many other wonderful things to learn during preschool.  Things such as sharing, taking turns, small motor skills (that will help with holding a pencil), cutting, and moving about the classroom in a quiet manner.  All things that will help your child be ready for kindergarten.

Technology

I have 3 Ipad's in my classroom.  I have several wonderful programs to help the students with learning their letters, numbers, colors, shapes, and even start reading.  It is one of the students very favorite centers to go to.  I feel it's an excellent tool to help the children learn!
